It doesn't really take that much rationalization, though: humans, like all animals, instinctively know how to mate with their human mating organs. When Jake is controlling his avatar's body, his biochemical reactions, instincts, etc., are probably that of the avatar. Thus, instinctively knowing how to mate should not be that much of a problem.
